| Well this is the real reason to head south. Windsurfing! June is the best wind month in Aruba with 20 mph in the morning and 25 - 30 in the afternoons. It was windy every day. And the best place to sail is at Aruba Windsurfing located at Fisherman's Huts just 1/2 mile north of the Marriott. Vela Windsurfing Center is located at the Marriott, but everyone sails down the beach in front of Aruba Windsurfing. Since the wind is off shore, the Marriott and other hotels along the beach play havoc with the wind. In front of the Huts there is no blockage so a nice steady wind (although it's always gusty in Aruba). The staff at Aruba Windsurfer were great (Wesley and Eelko) and the rates were reasonable ($30 a day if you stayed at Sunset Blvd Studios - owned by JP & Eef, also owners of Aruba Windsurfing). They also arranged for a great lunch (about $6 for sandwich from a local deli) and had sodas available on a honor basis. I would suggest if you're just getting started in this sport that you take beginners lessons at Vela, as they seem better equipped for this type of training. But this is some of the best windsurfing in the world - flat water, waist deep, firm sandy bottom, clear aqua blue, no sea monsters (in fact we didn't see any sealife) and great wind. | ||||||||||
